Test Drive 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT in Southfield MI
In addition to being one of the top-tier compact sedans in the United States, the Hyundai Elantra has a sportier and more functional variant named the GT. Fashioned as a five-door hatchback, the Elantra GT has been around since 2007. The 2018 model year marks the beginning of the GT’s third generation. It is split into two trims: a base-level model and the Sport.
Flanking the chrome-trimmed gloss-black grille of the new Elantra GT are a pair of projector headlights, which can automatically turn on or off depending on the amount of light outside. Also on the front fascia are LED daytime running lights to increase visibility to pedestrians and other drivers. On the front doors are a pair of power heated mirrors; on the driver’s side is a blind side mirror. Turn-signal indicators are added on the side mirrors of the Sport. Also, on the Sport, the halogen bulbs of the headlights and taillights are replaced by brighter and longer-lasting LED ones. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels go on the regular model, while 18-inch alloy wheels go on the Sport. Optional on the Elantra GT is a panoramic sunroof.
Designed as a compact car, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT provides two rows of seats for up to five people. Passenger volume is measured at 96.5 cubic feet. Standard cargo space is increased from the original sedan body style—up to 24.9 cubic feet. You can fold down the rear bench-style seat to increase cargo volume to 55.1 cubic feet. Front seating consists of 6-way manually adjustable driver and passenger seats. Leather upholstery (in place of cloth trim) and front-seat heating capability are added on the Sport trim. For comfort and convenience, the 2018 Elantra GT comes with features such as Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen, six-speaker AM/FM audio, HD Radio®, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for smartphone-based control, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack for connecting mobile devices, a complimentary SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription, and a 3.5-inch monochromatic TFT cluster display.
On the Sport, Hyundai adds proximity key entry, push-button engine start, a color 4.2-inch TFT cluster display (in place of the 3.5-inch one), and a dual fully automatic temperature control with CleanAir ionizer and auto-defogging ability. Optional on any trim are features like power adjustability on the driver’s seat, front-seat cooling ability, 8-inch touchscreen navigation, a wireless charging pad, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, and a seven-speaker Infinity® audio system. There’s also the option of getting the Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system for services and capabilities such as automatic collision notification, remote lock/unlock, emergency assistance, and vehicle health monitoring.
Mechanical / Powertrain
The standard engine on the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine with 161 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. The Sport uses a turbocharged 1.6-liter I4 with 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Each trim gets a 6-speed manual transmission—with the choice of a 6-speed automatic transmission on the base-level model and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters on the Sport. The 2018 Elantra GT has a unibody construction that provides sturdiness and a stout driving feel. The front suspension comprises MacPherson struts. At the back, there’s a difference between trims; the regular model rolls with a torsion axle design and the racing-style Sport uses multi-link independent rear suspension. Four-wheel disc brakes on the Elantra GT—with larger ones on the Sport trim—keep stopping distances short. And motor-driven power steering—efficient because it draws power from a standalone source, rather than from the engine—produces a turning circle diameter of 34.78 cubic feet.
For restraint and cushioning in the event of a collision, the 2018 Elantra GT has a driver’s knee airbag, dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side curtain airbags, and dual roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Also standard on the GT are features such as anti-lock braking for preventing wheel lockup when the brake pedal is abruptly pressed, hill start assist for monitored driving up a steep slope, brake assist for added stopping force when needed, electronic vehicle stability control for keeping you on your intended driving path, traction control for preventing the wheels from skidding, and electronic brake-force distribution for proper allocation of stopping force, and a rearview camera with dynamic parking guidelines for video monitoring when moving in reverse. On the Sport, Hyundai adds lane change assist, blind spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Also, you can add forward collision warning, smart cruise control with start/stop capability, lane departure warning, high beam assist, driver attention assist, lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
