From its humble beginnings in 1985, the Hyundai Sonata has blossomed into one of the most desirable mid-size sedans in the market today. Comfortable to drive, easy on the wallet, and backed by one of the industry's most generous warranties, the Sonata has found it incredibly easy to stand apart from its peers. The 2016 Hyundai Sonata marks the second model year of the nameplate's seventh production cycle. It offers four trims: SE, Sport, ECO, and Limited; the Sport and Limited also have 2.0-liter turbocharged engine-equipped versions (2.0T).

Hyundai Sonata InteriorClassified as a mid-size four-door sedan, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata provides ample space for five adult occupants, with total interior volume measured at 122.4 cubic feet. Rear seating has a 60/40 split-folding feature to allow more luggage room, while all trims except for the SE has eight-way power adjustability on the front bucket seats. Hyundai adds six-way power on the front passenger seat and leather surfaces on all the seats of the Limited. With the 2.0T version, Hyundai puts in leather seats with stitching and sport bolsters. For entertainment, all trims but the Limited 2.0T get a six-speaker stereo system, which includes an AM/FM radio tuner, CD player with MP3 playback, SiriusXM satellite capability, HD Radio technology, controls mounted on the steering wheel, and USB and auxiliary ports for smartphones and other types of mobile devices. The Limited 2.0T comes with a nine-speaker, 400-watt Infinity premium audio system, which adds a subwoofer and external amplifier. Additionally, in place of the seven-inch color touchscreen, the Limited 2.0T gets an eight-inch touchscreen display with a navigation system. Included on the 2016 Sonata are a Bluetooth hands-free phone system and a Blue Link telematics system for integrating vehicle information. Higher-level trims get more advanced features like heating capability on the steering wheel, power moonroof, heating and cooling capability on the front seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a HomeLink garage-door opener and compass.

Hyundai Sonata Exterior

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata rides on 16-, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels. Also standard on the sedan are automatic projector headlights, dual fold-away power heated side mirrors, rear lip spoiler, and shark-fin antenna. Optional or also standard on some trims are features like chrome-tipped dual or quad exhaust (instead of single), high-intensity discharge xenon headlights, and turn-signal indicators on the side mirrors.

Hyundai Sonata Powertrain

With the 2016 Hyundai Sonata, you have three engine choices. The SE, Sport, and Limited versions get the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder (I4) engine, which generates 185 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 178 foot-pounds (lb-ft) of torque at 4,000 RPM. The ECO gets the fuel efficiency-minded 1.6-liter twin-scroll turbocharged I4. It generates 178 horsepower at 5,500 RPM and 195 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 to 4,500 RPM. The aptly-named 2.0T Sport and Limited get the 2.0T I4, which, like the 1.6-liter engine, is also twin-scroll turbocharged; it provides 245 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 260 lb-ft of torque at 1,350 to 4,000 RPM. The 2.0- and 2.4-liter engines are linked to a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC, a feature that allows drivers to change gears on demand, as well as adapts specifically to your driving habits. The 1.6-liter engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which also features SHIFTRONIC. Depending on the trim, fuel economy is measured at 25 to 32 miles per gallon.

Hyundai Sonata Mechanical

The 2016 Sonata uses a steel unibody construction, which combines the body and chassis, rather than bolting together separate pieces onto the frame. This gives the vehicle increased stability. The sedan comes with a four-wheel independent suspension that consists of a MacPherson strut design at the front and multi-link design at the back; the 2.0T version gets a sports-tuned suspension for a firmer and crisper performance. For ample maneuverability, the Sonata gets motor-driven power steering, with a rack mounted sports-tuned system on the 2.0T and column-mounted system on the other trims. The vehicle also has four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with four-channel anti-lock braking (ABS) for super effective braking power.

Hyundai Sonata Safety

The 2016 Sonata has front-impact air bags for the driver and front passenger, a driver's knee air bag, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side impact air bags, and roof-mounted side curtain air bags for head protection for all occupants. The air bag system is accompanied by an occupant-classification sensor, which governs inflation depending on the crash severity and seat belt usage. Also included are a rear LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system for child occupants, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist for optimal braking control, and electronic stability system with traction control for reducing the risk of skidding and maintaining stability of the vehicle in less favorable driving conditions. For security, the Q70 has an anti-theft security system that comes with remote keyless entry, a panic alarm, and an engine immobilizer. Can't wait to Test Drive 2016 Hyundai Sonata?
