2018 Hyundai Sonata Sport Waterford MI

Overview

Although it has been around since 1985, it wasn't until the late 2000s that the Hyundai Sonata truly blossomed into one of the best midsize sedans in the market. For the 2018 model year-halfway through its seventh generation of production-Hyundai gave the Sonata a major facelift, unveiling the changes on April 2017. Included in this update is one of the upper-level trims: the Sport. The 2018 Hyundai Sonata Sport is the ideal model to go with if you want a more sports-style driving and emotional feel.

Interior

For the 2018 model year, the entire cabin of the Hyundai Sonata was refreshed; it features a reshaped dashboard, new air vents on the driver's side, and a new steering wheel, instrument cluster, and gearshift. Designed as a five-seater, the car supplies 106.1 cubic feet of passenger volume. Behind the rear seats is 16.3 cubic feet of cargo volume. However, you can fold down the rear seats to expand the luggage space into the cabin. The racing-style seating features leather bolsters and cloth inserts, and the cabin features 3D tech accents. The front row consists of a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support and an integrated memory system; and a 6-way power adjustable passenger seat. Both front seats can be heated or cooled when needed or necessary. For infotainment, the Sonata Sport has a six-speaker stereo system with AM/FM tuner, MP3 playback capability, Bluetooth for hands-free communication and audio streaming, HD radio, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone-based control, and a three-month complimentary SiriusXM satellite radio subscription. Also, the audio display has been upgraded to a 7-inch touchscreen, and Hyundai has added a wireless phone charger and USB port for rear passengers. The Blue Link telematics system is still around: comprising three-year complimentary Connected Care and Remote packages that includes car services like automatic collision notification, emergency assistance, monthly vehicle health reporting, remote start and lock/unlock, and stolen vehicle recovery. For 2018, Hyundai made Blue Link compatible with Amazon Echo and Google Home devices.

Exterior

For the 2018 model year, the Sonata Sport gets redesigned exterior lighting, and the grille is now wider and falls further on the front fascia. However, it sticks with the sharper, more aggressive-looking second-generation "Fluidic Sculpture" design language. The Sport does stand out from most Sonata trims with its sports-style front fascia, rocker panels, and rear diffuser, as well as a chrome-tipped dual exhaust for increased engine performance. The projector-style headlights can turn on and off automatically in response to the amount of outdoor light, and it includes LED daytime running lights to increase conspicuity. On top of the sedan is a power tilt-and-slide moonroof, and at the sides are a pair of fold-away heated power mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators. The 2018 Sonata Sport rides on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Mechanical

The 2018 Sonata Sport goes with a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension to cushion occupants from turbulence when driving on compromised or rough surfaces. The sedan uses motor-driven power steering, which means that it uses a standalone power source-an electric motor-rather than drawing power from the engine. The power steering provides a turning circle of 35.6 feet. Power four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes enable stopping distances to be rather short, as well as prevent the wheels from locking up when the brake pedal is abruptly pressed.

Powertrain

Powering the 2018 Sonata Sport is the Theta, a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that generates 185 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 178 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM. Connected to the engine is a 6-speed automatic transmission, which includes a SHIFTRONIC shifter to offer more control over gear shifting. Adding more of a manual-gearbox feel are steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and there's a Driver Mode Select system for varying the transmission feel based on weather or road conditions.

Safety

For safety in the event of a crash, the 2018 Sonata Sport comes with dual front impact airbags that face the driver and front passenger, a driver's knee airbag, a pair of front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and dual roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Other standard safety features include a rearview camera for flashing a video image for monitoring driving when in reverse, electronic vehicle stability for keeping you on the intended traveling path, traction control for detecting and combating skidding, electronic brake-force distribution for proper allocation of braking force to the wheels, and brake assist for additional stopping power when needed. Advanced safety is provided by a blind spot detection system, which is bundled with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist. For security, there's a remote keyless entry system with panic alarm.
